| Why AsthmaMoms? AsthmaMoms is a network of families sharing answers for managing their children's asthma. It's also a community of concerned parents, reassuring one another that their deepest fears about their children's asthma can be overcome. It provides what the medical organizations can't, a supportive community of parents. What makes AsthmaMoms different is that it's a live interactive site, for you and by you. You're invited to enjoy the resources. By sharing your secrets with others, this site will become more and more valuable. I started AsthmaMoms because my friends were having trouble finding the information they needed to manage asthma in their families. They spoke to pediatricians and they read books, but a lot of the information they needed they could only get from talking among their friends, if they could get it at all. It was in the spirit of these moms, my friends, that I saw the opportunity to apply the power of the Internet. AsthmaMoms is pro-medicine and pro-science. It is not meant to replace medical care. But every parent who goes to the pediatrician also talks to other parents about what they have learned and what they didn't learn that they need to know. They also talk about the quality of care they've received and whether it's appropriate to their needs. AsthmaMoms extends that circle of parents to the entire Internet. AsthmaMoms is not a "chat room" or a newsgroup. Underneath the Web pages are databases that keep track of all the knowledge that parents, and others, provide. Asthma sufferers and parents of asthma sufferers contribute their observations, experiences and feelings; edited and organized, it joins the ever-growing knowledge base that may help you manage the asthma problem in your family. AsthmaMoms is not just moms. It's dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters and caregivers too. I chose the name because my friends were all moms, and because moms have a natural talent for sharing what they know -- a talent that the Internet can make even more valuable. AsthmaMoms values the insights and experiences of all those who have asthma or manage it in their families. What makes AsthmaMoms different than other sites is that it is for you and by you. Please join me in this work-in-progress. Sincerely, Catherine McVay Hughes, Founder and President |
